If you asked me what’s the most important martial art to begin learning as a starting point for self defense? Without hesitation I’d say boxing!

Why? The secret is in the movement, footwork and timing. These are attributes you develop through boxing and kickboxing training (and also in our Kali / Filipino weapon training and JKD).

What you find out is that if someone attacks you and you try to hit them back, they won’t just stand there and let you. Who Knew! Before you can use any other cool techniques you’ll learn, you first need to be able to move!

Kensho’s curriculum starts with boxing and kickboxing movement and footwork to get our students rocking in a hurry. After just a few classes, you’ll be developing the confidence to use it if you need to. Time and again, I’ve seen our beginning students able to successfully defend themselves in life threatening situations! That’s what it’s all about.

Roger Luri – Founder / Head Instructor

When it comes to self defense, at Kensho Chicago we teach a variety of the most effective and devastating  fighting arts.

Why? Because when it comes to a self defense scenario, there can be many variables and because of this it’s not possible to predict exactly what skill will be right for the given situation. Some might  try to tell you that you only need to know a couple of trick techniques, but it’s just not so. You can’t learn to defend yourself in one session. You build confidence in your skills and experience over a period of time.

While martial arts are designed to help you to defend yourself against a bigger stronger opponent, Self Defense training should help you to get into the best shape of your life so that you feel ready and confident.

Roger Luri our founder has been teaching martial arts for 30 years. As former Head Instructor at The Degerberg Academy, Roger was instrumental in helping to develop one of the most highly regarded street oriented self defense systems in the martial arts world . Our philosophy is closely aligned with Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do concepts which are known to be some of the most adaptable and practical martial arts principals for self defense.

Our  system combines aspects of  Western Boxing and Wrestling with Thai Boxing, French Savate, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Jun Fan, Filipino Kali, Indonesian Silat and other Arts. We have found over 30 years practice that in self defense, individuals will instinctively draw on what they have learned and use what works the best for them in a given situation. Through training one gains experience and with that comes confidence.

Every class is a safe, fun, supportive and positive experience; not to mention an incredible workout.
