Yoga at Kensho

The word Kensho is a Zen term for a glimpse of our true nature. In life,we experience that moment of true clarity. Mastery of martial arts as mastery of life requires sustainable balance; flexibility, strength, stamina, focus and energy.

Flexibility and strength are two sides of the same coin. At Kensho, our goal is to help our students to learn to maintain a healthy balance in their bodies and in their lives. The word Yoga implies a yoking or joining of mind, body and spirit.

Kensho’s  dynamic Yoga Flow was developed by our director Roger Luri based on a 30 years of practice blending different styles of yoga including Iyengar, Ashtanga and Tibetan styles with martial arts, gymnastics and pilates movements. Kensho Martial Arts students work to open up and increase their flexibility, strength and range of motion.

Many of the martial arts have associated healing arts which were designed to help fighters to heal injuries. The Tibetan Letha, Longi and Dhanda yoga styles were designed to help people with physical injuries to heal themselves in order to get back to work.

Our classes are designed to develop the strength, balance flexibility and range of motion required to support martial arts or other physically demanding activities. Classes will help to identify and strengthen musculature that we don’t normally use while sitting at our desk,  in the car, in front of the TV or just walking around the house or office. (Let’s face it, in our society, this is how most of us spend a large amount of our time.) This is an ongoing process for us all, especially when athletes reach their 40’s, 50’s and beyond.

Achieve sustainable balance thru martial arts conditioning, yoga and meditation with us at Kensho Chicago
